Pine Richland Rams and the Greater Latrobe Wildcats skated to a scoreless tie with the shots 9-6 in favor of Greater Latrobe after one period in the PIHL Class “AA” Penguins Cup Final at the CONSOL Energy Center Wednesday night.
The next 34 minutes would tell a much different story.
In the second, two underclassmen helped Latrobe get on the board at the 7:52 mark when freshman Dalton Hunter assisted sophomore Daniel Staffens’ goal that gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
Latrobe would find the back of the cage again at 10:14 off the stick of Dalton Hunter with Robert Vasinko and Nathan Winebrenner getting credited for the helpers. Just 41 seconds later, the Wildcats strike again as Brendan Johns fed junior Adam Ferguson giving the cats a commanding 3-0 lead.
Wildcats goaltender Shane Brudnok shut the door on the Rams in the third, steering away 17 of the 28 shots he faced in the game in the final frame. Brudnok was in net for Latrobe last time the team made the finals that ended in an overtime loss to Bishop Canevin.
“The win feels great, and to get the shutout feels amazing. I remember how it felt to get here and come up short and I didn’t want to feel that again.” Brudnok said.
His teammates would light the lamp twice more in the third, Dalton Hunter would score his second goal of the game and Brendan Johns would add a 5th goal at 13:57 from Chris Johnon and Josh Singley.
Latrobe (19-2) will now look for their first state Championship since going back-to-back in 2009 and 2010. Wildcats will take on Cherokee Saturday in Aston, PA; you can watch the game live on the PIHL Network.
