WPIAL Championships Preview

11/21/2012, 3:15pm EST
By Jeffrey J. Wink

Road to Heinz Ends This Friday

Sixty-four teams started their journey to make it to play at Heinz Field in the beginning of the month.  Now only eight reamain.  This Friday the WPIAL will crown four champions on the same field that the Pittsburgh Steelers play their home games.  All four games can be seen on Root Sports live starting at 11:00 am.

The Class A game will be a rematch of last year's game as Clairton will look for their fifth straight title and sixth in seven years as they will battle Sto-Rox.  Last year Clairton defeated Sto-Rox 42-6 enroute to winning the state championship later that year.

North Allegheny will be looking to be the first ever team to win three championships at AAAA when they take on Woodland Hills.  George Novak will be looking for it's sixth championship in their brief 27 year history.  The championship would be George Novak's 7th as he won one with Steel Valley.  Art Walker, Jr. has not lost to a WPIAL team since losing to North Hills in the final game of the 2009 regular season.

In Class AA, the Aliquippa Quips will be looking to repeat when they face the upstart Washington Little Prexies.  Washington will be looking to win their first title since 2001, the first season the WPIAL Championships were held at Heinz Field.

The most exciting game appears to be at the AAA level when West Allegheny takes on West Mifflin.  This will be a rematch of the 2000 championship, the last on held at Three Rivers Stadium.  That was a game that West Allegheny won 21-7 behind Tyler Palko.  West Allegheny last won the WPIAL in 2009.  West Mifflin will be looking to win their first ever WPIAL Championship.

The Champs Sports Network will have complete coverage of all games from Heinz Field.
